Allegiant Drops ULCC Drink Fees, Plans First Class on 23 MAX Deliveries
Allegiant Air will offer complimentary water, soda and juice to every passenger from August 1 and plans to install a First Class cabin on 23 new Boeing 737 MAX deliveries beginning in 2027.
Read-back
- Allegiant begins complimentary non-alcoholic beverages on August 1, ending its pay-for-everything ULCC beverage policy.
- Allegiant First will be installed on 23 new Boeing 737 MAX deliveries starting in 2027.
- The cabin features two rows of 2x2 recliners; seats go on sale in mid-August.
- The first routes operate from Punta Gorda, where the MAX will reach 44% of January departures per Cirium schedule data.
- Three 737 MAX 8-200s and three MAX 7s are slated for delivery in the first quarter per Cirium fleet data.

Allegiant Air will begin serving complimentary water, soda and juice to every passenger starting Saturday, August 1, ending a policy that monetized every beverage on board. The shift lands months after Allegiant closed its acquisition of Sun Country Airlines, and the carrier confirmed it in a written statement: "The decision to introduce complimentary beverages was based on what we have heard from passengers. While the integration process provides us with an opportunity to evaluate best practices across both airlines, this decision ultimately reflects Allegiant's commitment to the customer experience."
The change mirrors Sun Country's existing service model. Sun Country kept complimentary non-alcoholic drinks even after CEO Jude Bricker pivoted the Minneapolis-based carrier toward an ultra-low-cost structure. Allegiant, by contrast, had held the line on charging passengers for everything from bottled water to coffee.
What changes for Allegiant cardholders?
World Elite Mastercard holders previously received one complimentary beverage per segment up to $16, covering sodas, juices and entry-tier alcohol. With the new policy, complimentary soft drinks extend to every passenger. Allegiant is repositioning the card around "elevated" beverages that remain free exclusively for cardholders:
- Coffees
- Protein shakes
- Sports drinks
- Mixed drinks
Premium wines at $22 and Don Julio tequila at $17 still cost extra across the board.
How big is the First Class bet?
Allegiant has disclosed plans to install a new premium cabin called Allegiant First on 23 Boeing 737 MAX deliveries beginning in 2027. The product comprises two rows of 2-across recliners in a 2-2 layout. Allegiant confirmed to Flightdeck Report that the cabin will appear only on new-build aircraft, not retrofits, and that seats will go on sale by mid-August.
The launch base will be Punta Gorda (PGD), a logistics decision more than a marketing one. Allegiant's existing 737-8 MAX fleet has clustered at Fort Lauderdale, Orlando-Sanford and St. Pete-Clearwater. Cirium schedule data shows the MAX share of Punta Gorda departures rising sharply in December, reaching 44 percent by January and likely climbing further as the schedule extends.
Which MAX variant will carry the new cabin?
Cirium fleet data shows three 737 MAX 8-200s scheduled for delivery between mid-December and mid-March, plus three 737 MAX 7s due in the first quarter of next year. The MAX 7's FAA certification appears imminent, raising the possibility that Allegiant First debuts on the smaller variant rather than the -8-200. Both early-build lines are routing through Punta Gorda, where Allegiant has historically operated Airbus A320-family equipment.
Why does a 2-2 recliner layout matter?
Allegiant First is not a Sun Country product — Sun Country dropped first class about a decade ago when it transitioned to the ULCC model. The premium push tracks the rest of the US industry, where most mainline and low-cost carriers have layered extra-fare seats over coach. The narrow 2-2 footprint leaves room for Allegiant to add premium rows without sacrificing an entire coach row at its existing seat pitch, particularly on the MAX 7, where monument locations and exit-door geometry may already constrain row count.
What does the merger integration look like so far?
The complimentary-drink rollout marks the first visible service-policy transfer from Sun Country to Allegiant. Whether integration pulls Allegiant further toward Sun Country's customer-friendly stance or pulls Sun Country toward Allegiant's lower-cost base remains open. The First Class announcement suggests Allegiant will pursue premium upsells regardless of the Sun Country playbook, while selectively absorbing Sun Country practices where passenger feedback supports them. Watch the next quarterly call for an updated delivery cadence on the 23 MAX frames earmarked for the new cabin.
