Azerbaijan Airlines Cuts Baku-Moscow Flights Over Airspace Limits
Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended several Baku-Moscow flights, citing airspace restrictions on routings between the two capitals. No end date has been given for the cuts.
Read-back
- Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended several Baku-Moscow flights
- Airspace restrictions affecting the route pair are cited as the cause
- The suspension is partial, not a full exit from the Moscow market
- No end date for the suspension has been announced

Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended several flights between Baku and Moscow, citing airspace restrictions that affect routing on the route pair between the two capitals.
The suspension narrows capacity on one of the busiest corridors in the Caucasus-CIS market. Azerbaijan Airlines operates the Baku-Moscow sector with a mix of Airbus A320-family aircraft and widebodies, and the route serves both point-to-point ethnic and business traffic and connections over the carrier's Baku hub to destinations in Turkey, Central Asia and the Gulf.
Airspace restrictions have reshaped flight planning across the wider region since the closure of Russian airspace to carriers from dozens of states in 2022, forcing detours that raise block times and fuel burn. For an airline of Azerbaijan Airlines' scale, even modest increases in sector length on a high-frequency route translate directly into aircraft-utilisation and cost consequences.
What does the suspension change?
The airline has halted several — not all — of its Baku-Moscow rotations. That partial pattern points to specific routings or arrival airports that have become operationally difficult, rather than a wholesale exit from the market. Azerbaijan Airlines serves multiple Moscow-area airports, and restrictions affecting particular arrival points or airways would hit individual frequencies first.
Passengers booked on suspended services face rebooking onto the remaining flights or rerouting through partner carriers. The airline has not announced an end date for the suspensions in the information released so far.
Why does the route matter?
Baku-Moscow is a dense, price-competitive market contested by Azerbaijan Airlines, Russian carriers and, historically, low-cost operators. Capacity withdrawn by one carrier typically leaves a gap competitors can move into quickly, provided they can fly the same routings without hitting the same restrictions.
For Azerbaijan Airlines, the corridor also feeds transfer traffic at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, so the suspension's network effects extend beyond the point-to-point Moscow market itself.
The carrier says the suspensions stem from airspace restrictions; the duration and full scope of the cut, and whether other Russia-bound routes are affected, will become clear as schedules stabilise.
