- The deal was signed at the UN General Assembly in New York with US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau present.
- Chairman Rumee A Hossain framed the order as part of a broader plan to strengthen Bangladesh's international connectivity.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines committed on September 24, 2026, to 11 additional Boeing aircraft, lifting its 2026 Boeing order book to 25 jets and setting up a near-tripling of its jet fleet over the medium term.
The Dhaka-based flag carrier confirmed five B787-10 Dreamliners and six B737-8 MAX jets, signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau and Bangladesh's Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashiduzzaman Millat attended the ceremony.
How does this fit Biman's 2026 Boeing commitment?
The September deal sits apart from an April 2026 order for 14 aircraft — eight B787-10s, two B787-9s and four 737 MAX 8s. Together, the two contracts cover the largest single Boeing shopping commitment from a Bangladeshi operator on record.
Biman Chairman Rumee A Hossain tied the incremental deal to the airline's broader plan. "This agreement is one part of a broader, carefully considered plan to strengthen the country's international connectivity in the years ahead," he stated.
What does the order mean for fleet size?
ch-aviation data shows Biman operated 14 jet aircraft and three DHC-8 turboprops as of September 2026. The fleet breaks down as four B777s, four B737-800s, four B787-8s and two B787-9s.
Delivery of all 25 ordered aircraft would lift the jet count from 14 to 39, an increase of 179%. The 787-10s add high-capacity twin-aisle seating for trunk routes, while the 737 MAX 8s back domestic and short-haul international flying.
The data also reveals a structural shift inside the wide-body operation. Every wide-body on order is a 787 derivative. The four B777s would remain the only non-787 long-haul jets once deliveries arrive, leaving Biman to manage three 787 sub-fleets alongside the older 777s.
What does Boeing gain?
The contract extends 2026 sales momentum for the 737 MAX and 787 lines, both central to Boeing's commercial order recovery. A signed order from a state-owned flag carrier, witnessed by two senior US officials, carries diplomatic signalling that a lessor commitment does not.
Boeing did not release a delivery schedule, an engine selection for the MAX 8s, or the order's value. The announcement also left financing partners unnamed, a routine gap on flag-carrier deals of this scale.
What remains unclear?
Three items are absent from the public record. Biman did not specify delivery slots across the 2027–2030 fleet planning horizon. Engine selection for the six 737 MAX 8s — CFM LEAP-1B is the standard offering for the type — went unmentioned. And no timeline was offered for the order book Airbus-competition context, with the carrier's wide-body renewal now exclusively sourced from a single OEM.
Existing 787-8 and 787-9 deliveries from prior orders overlap with the new 787-10 commitment. Commonality decisions on the ramp-up will determine whether Biman ultimately operates three 787 sub-types at the same time or phases the smaller variants out earlier.
The carrier's next commercial milestone is likely the entry-into-service of the first 787-10 already on contract, with the combined 25-aircraft purchase positioning Biman to recapture international traffic now routed through Gulf and South-East Asian hubs.
