British Airways to install 106-seat business class deck on every A380

British Airways will fit 106 Club Suites across the full upper deck of every A380, the carrier said on October 5, 2026. The fleet-wide retrofit forms part of an $8bn revamp that also adds a T5C lounge and a new Terminal 3 first check-in.

Read-back

  1. 106 Club Suite seats will cover the entire upper deck of each A380, which BA calls the world's largest business class cabin on a single deck
  2. Each retrofit requires installation of more than 35,000 individual parts across four cabins totaling 417 seats
  3. Announcement made on October 5, 2026, with the first redelivered aircraft expected to enter service within months
  4. Programme is part of the $8 billion revamp BA unveiled in March 2024 covering more than 600 modernization initiatives
  5. Heathrow Terminal 5C lounge is due to open at the end of 2028, featuring a 17-metre bar

British Airways will equip every Airbus A380 in its fleet with 106 Club Suites spread across the entire upper deck, the carrier said on October 5, 2026, in what it described as the world's largest business class cabin on a single deck.

The retrofit demands more than 35,000 individual parts per aircraft and covers all four cabins: 12 First suites, 106 Club World, 84 World Traveller Plus and 215 World Traveller seats. The first redelivered aircraft is set to enter service within months.

Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle called the project a "major milestone" for British Airways and "one of the most significant transformations" undertaken on any of the airline's aircraft. "We've completely reimagined the customer experience, introducing new and updated seats in every cabin, all carefully considered to deliver greater comfort and an elevated customer experience," Doyle said. "At the heart of the transformation is our brand-new First suite, but this investment goes far beyond a single cabin."

What does the business class deck look like?

The 106 Club Suite seats divide into four distinct zones on the upper deck. BA reworked the interiors, galleys and stairways to give passengers continuous movement through the cabin. New Club Kitchen stations sit alongside redesigned galley spaces, and amenity kits ship in four unique designs.

Lie-flat seats use a refreshed color palette drawn from the airline's blue, red and cream accents. The suites add storage and improved functionality, BA said, alongside features "designed to make every journey more comfortable and intuitive."

How does the new First suite compare to rivals?

The First suite, which BA previewed in 2024 with a Concorde-inspired design, measures 36.5 inches across and converts into a 6-foot 7-inch bed. Each station sits within a curved 60-inch wall for privacy, with adjustable mood lighting scenes labelled "relax," "dine" and "cinema."

A 32-inch 4K screen anchors the suite, alongside a multi-purpose ottoman and a stowable table. Centre-aisle dividers open between paired seats to create a shared lounge, with stowable tables for "buddy dining." Passengers receive a bespoke unisex amenity kit, a woven day blanket, navy sleepwear and slippers.

What changes for premium economy and economy?

Premium economy and economy travellers receive wider seats, larger in-flight entertainment screens and upgraded bedding. Premium economy adds privacy wings; economy gets new pillows and plusher blankets.

Premium economy customers also receive a reusable tote-style amenity kit containing moisturizing balm, a dental kit, socks and an eye mask.

What else is the airline spending on at Heathrow?

The retrofit forms part of the $8 billion revamp BA announced in March 2024, spanning more than 600 modernization initiatives. On the same October day, BA confirmed:

  • A new lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5C, under construction and scheduled to open at the end of 2028, with a 17-metre bar the airline expects to be among the longest airport lounge bars anywhere.
  • A full redevelopment of the Terminal 5 arrivals lounge, starting early 2027 and opening by end-2027.
  • A redesigned first-class check-in at Heathrow Terminal 3, built in collaboration with American Airlines and set to open this winter.

The T5C lounge uses timber, glazing, intricate metalwork, textiles and bespoke furnishings sourced across the UK, BA said. The project rounds out a multi-year rebuild of the carrier's Heathrow lounge portfolio.

What does the programme deliver operationally?

Fleet-wide completion of the A380 retrofit will define BA's premium product against competitors on long-haul trunk routes, with the Heathrow-first check-in giving the carrier and its oneworld partner American Airlines a coordinated ground experience at Terminal 3. BA's commitment to keeping the A380 in service for the next decade runs alongside a separate narrowbody and Boeing 777 cabin refresh already underway.

With the first reconfigured A380 still months from re-entry, BA's commitment to the type stands in contrast to the phased retirements underway at several superjumbo operators.
