The airport, identified by the FAA code HXD, handles scheduled airline service connecting the island market to hub gateways. Airlines serving Hilton Head have historically operated regional jets and, in recent schedules, mainline narrowbodies during peak leisure travel periods, when the island's population and visitor volumes surge.

Airport officials had framed the expansion as a response to capacity constraints at the existing terminal and airside infrastructure, which limited the facility's ability to accommodate peak-season demand.
