Ljubljana Airport builds a bigger network as 2027 plans emerge
Ljubljana Airport enters winter with 22 routes and 18 airlines. Nine-month traffic rose 15.7%, while United, easyJet, airBaltic and TUI have announced more services.
Read-back
- 1,426,600 passengers used Ljubljana Airport in the first nine months of 2026, up 15.7% year on year.
- August 2026 traffic reached 222,958 passengers, above the previous August 2019 record of 211,595.
- The winter timetable has 22 direct routes and 18 airlines from 25 October through March.
- easyJet began London Luton service on 26 October with up to four weekly flights.
- United plans four weekly Newark flights from 12 May 2027; easyJet Berlin starts 7 April, while TUI's Düsseldorf launch on 4 May has no announced frequency.

Ljubljana Airport handled 1,426,600 passengers in the first nine months of 2026, up 15.7% from a year earlier. Fraport Slovenija also reported that August was the busiest month in the airport’s history, with 222,958 passengers. September traffic rose 16.6% from September 2025.
The airport’s winter timetable, effective from 25 October through the end of March, contains 22 direct routes served by 18 airlines. It adds United Kingdom and Canary Islands service after a record summer.
What changed after Adria Airways?
For years, Ljubljana attracted few airlines after Adria Airways, the Slovenian national carrier, disappeared. Airlines frequently objected: “Too expensive, too little demographic potential.” They also cited the proximity of airports in Zagreb, Trieste and Vienna.
The complaint identified perceived constraints, but the announcement supplies no airport-charge comparison or catchment analysis. New carriers and routes arrived in 2025 and 2026, marking what the airport calls a turning point. It does not identify every arriving carrier. Route and passenger data therefore offer firmer evidence than the label itself.
August’s 222,958 passengers exceeded the previous record of 211,595, set in August 2019. Neither the traffic data nor the timetable shows load factors, fares or carrier profitability. Published routes establish planned service, not a durable business case.
Against the earlier objections, 22 routes and 15.7% nine-month growth give the turnaround measurable substance, although the announcement supplies no evidence on yields, airport costs or airline margins.
What is flying this winter?
easyJet began London Luton service on 26 October, with up to four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The route raises its Ljubljana network to four destinations:
- easyJet destinations: London Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and London Luton.
- airBaltic: A new weekly Tenerife service, complementing its existing Gran Canaria connection.
- Major European hubs: Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul, London, Paris, Warsaw and Zurich.
The winter connections provide onward travel across Europe and beyond. Together, they extend the airport’s network reach and airline choice beyond its previous base.
The combined winter schedule therefore offers more airline choice and network reach, but its commercial significance depends on how consistently those services operate beyond the first winter.
The phrase “up to four weekly flights” leaves the final count less firm than a fixed four-flight commitment. The winter timetable itself is operating evidence, not proof that every announced 2027 service will follow.
What is scheduled for 2027?
Three airlines have announced additions for the summer season. United’s Newark service is the largest planned market change, while easyJet and TUI are extending the European network.
- United Airlines: Direct service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Ljubljana from 12 May 2027, with four flights each week. The announcement calls it the most significant addition and links Slovenia with an important long-haul market.
- easyJet: Berlin Brandenburg Airport service from 7 April 2027, operating twice weekly. It would restore the direct link between the Slovenian and German capitals after seven years.
- TUI: Brussels service from 28 March 2027, with two weekly flights, and Düsseldorf service from 4 May 2027. TUI has not announced a flight frequency for Düsseldorf.
Taken together, the 2027 announcements extend Ljubljana’s network across the Atlantic and into three European cities, but published start dates remain less probative than completed summer operations.
Only the winter services have begun. The 2027 flights remain announced schedules, not operating records. The announcement gives no aircraft types, seat counts, regulatory milestones or evidence of bookings behind those schedules.
United’s four weekly flights and easyJet’s twice-weekly Berlin service provide concrete planning points. TUI’s missing Düsseldorf frequency leaves capacity there impossible to assess.
What does this change for passengers and the airport?
Passengers gain more direct European service plus a United option between Newark and Ljubljana. Berlin and Brussels add twice-weekly links to major capitals, while Tenerife offers a new weekly Canary Islands route. Four weekly transatlantic flights provide a usable option, but not a daily schedule.
For airlines and Ljubljana Airport, the larger passenger base and additional origins improve the market’s scale. The benefit remains conditional. The announcement shows neither fares nor costs and does not explain whether growth offsets the expense that once deterred carriers. Nor does it show that airport charges have fallen.
The airport presents new links as tools for tourism from the United States and easier access to Slovenia and the wider region. That is an expected demand effect, not an observed outcome.
The next test comes in summer 2027, when Newark, Berlin, Brussels and Düsseldorf must convert published dates into operated flights at the stated or announced frequencies. Actual aircraft capacity, load factors and route continuity will determine whether Ljubljana’s recovery becomes a durable network position.
