Singapore Airlines will begin operations at Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport on 23 November 2026, with Menzies Aviation assigned cargo, ramp and passenger handling from the start. The contract covers SIA’s ad hoc freighter operations and daily passenger flights at the new airport.
The airport’s 24-hour cargo precinct opened for business in July, and passenger services started in October. Those dates mark operating infrastructure already in place; 23 November remains the scheduled airline launch.
What capacity does the contract bring?
Menzies’ new airside cargo facility covers 12,500 square metres and can handle up to 200,000 tonnes annually. That annual ceiling equals roughly 550 tonnes per day on a simple 365-day average. The company describes the facility as its largest cargo warehouse in Oceania and Southeast Asia.
The April-announced facility provides capacity, not booked traffic. Menzies says it can handle pharmaceuticals, perishables, e-commerce shipments and heavy freight.
The precinct’s 24-hour access pairs physical space with extended operating windows, a practical advantage for the perishables and pharmaceuticals among Menzies’ listed cargo categories. The announcement gives no daily throughput, temperature-control specification or utilization forecast.
Menzies says its next-generation cargo management platform, MACH, provides enhanced visibility, efficiency and real-time shipment tracking. Those are supplier claims, and the announcement provides no handling-time gains, error rates or customer savings. Software promises do not establish a cost case on their own.
What does Singapore Airlines gain?
For SIA, the arrangement brings cargo, ramp and passenger work under one ground-services counterparty across three functions. The announcement does not disclose rates, contract value or guaranteed tonnage.
Darren Masters, Menzies’ executive vice president for Oceania, Southeast Asia and China, identified SIA as Menzies’ first airline customer at Western Sydney. He said: “Our new airside cargo facility and integrated service offering will support airline growth, strengthen supply chains and help establish the airport as a major aviation and cargo gateway for Australia.”
Masters said the appointment builds on a long-standing partnership and Menzies’ ability to deliver integrated passenger, ramp and cargo services. His growth claim remains management’s assessment, not a traffic forecast.
The partnership already covers freighter ramp handling in Sydney and Melbourne. Earlier this year, Menzies also won SIA’s ground-handling contract in Brisbane and Cairns. The relationship now spans five Australian airports: Western Sydney, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns.
What is operating, and what is still promised?
Foo Chai Woo, SIA’s regional vice president for South West Pacific, said: “As we prepare for the launch of operations at WSI from 23 November 2026, Singapore Airlines is working closely with Menzies.” She said both companies are ensuring readiness for the high-quality passenger, ramp and cargo handling services customers expect.
This is a ground-services contract, not an aircraft type certification. Three milestones are distinct: the cargo precinct opened in July, passenger services started in October, and SIA operations are scheduled for 23 November 2026. The first two are operating facts, while the third still depends on the airline completing its move.
Menzies provides air cargo and ground services at 15 airports across Australia. The contract forms part of a growing national presence, and Western Sydney is Menzies’ 11th cargo operation in the country.
For SIA, the immediate benefit is operational coverage for daily passenger flights and ad hoc freighters at the new airport. The announcement names no flight frequency, aircraft type or freighter schedule, and it provides no contract term, price or volume commitment. For Menzies, the facility offers 200,000 tonnes of annual capacity against whatever traffic Western Sydney attracts.
Capacity is not booked throughput. The next test comes after 23 November 2026, when actual passenger and cargo volumes will show whether the contract expands SIA’s network and Menzies’ utilization, or leaves the 200,000-tonne ceiling underused.
