Pegasus and AirAsia X sign first Europe-Asia LCC codeshare

Pegasus and AirAsia X have signed the only codeshare between a European and an Asian LCC, connecting Istanbul and Kuala Lumpur with five European destinations at launch.

Read-back

  1. The agreement is the only codeshare between a European and an Asian low-cost airline.
  2. It is Pegasus's sixth codeshare after Iberia, KLM, flynas, ITA Airways and Nile Air, and its first in Asia.
  3. It is AirAsia X's first ever codeshare.
  4. The initial scope covers AirAsia X's Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen–Kuala Lumpur flights and Pegasus services to five European destinations.
  5. Both carriers say they aim to expand the partnership to a significantly larger number of routes over time.

Pegasus Airlines and AirAsia Group have signed a codeshare agreement that the carriers describe as the only such commercial tie-up between a European and an Asian low-cost airline.

The deal, covering AirAsia X flights between Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Kuala Lumpur plus Pegasus services to five European destinations, marks the sixth codeshare for the Turkish carrier and its first in Asia. For AirAsia X, it is the first codeshare in the airline's history.

Pegasus has previously signed codeshares with Iberia, KLM, flynas, ITA Airways and Nile Air. The new agreement extends that list into a region where the Istanbul-based low-cost carrier had no partner presence until now.

Scope of the initial arrangement

At launch, the partnership connects AirAsia X's long-haul operation on the Istanbul-Kuala Lumpur route with Pegasus's short-haul network feeding five European destinations. Both carriers lead their respective hubs — Sabiha Gökçen for Pegasus and Kuala Lumpur for AirAsia X — and each serves a large number of destinations from those bases.

The two airlines state they intend to expand the partnership to a significantly larger number of routes over time, though neither has published a timeline or a target route count.

Why the deal stands out

Codeshare agreements between two low-cost carriers remain rare in global aviation. Interline and codeshare cooperation has historically been the domain of full-service network carriers and alliances. The Pegasus-AirAsia agreement is, according to the airlines, the sole codeshare linking a European LCC with an Asian one.

For Pegasus, the arrangement gives its European network access to Southeast Asian traffic without deploying its own metal on long-haul routes — a capacity decision consistent with its single-type Airbus A320-family operation. For AirAsia X, the deal feeds its Istanbul service with connecting European traffic via Sabiha Gökçen, strengthening the economics of the route.

The agreement positions Istanbul as a connecting node between the two low-cost networks. Whether the partnership broadens beyond the initial five European destinations will test whether the low-cost codeshare model can scale in the way full-service alliances have.
