Porter Airlines has opened four seasonal non-stop routes from Edmonton International Airport within a single month, marking the carrier's first international flights from Alberta. The Puerto Vallarta service began Nov. 3; Phoenix follows Nov. 6, and both Los Cabos and Las Vegas start Nov. 16.

The Canadian regional carrier timed the expansion ahead of the winter leisure season, targeting sun-bound traffic from northern Alberta. Peak frequencies vary by market: Phoenix will fly daily, Las Vegas and Los Cabos four times weekly, and Puerto Vallarta three times weekly.

"Porter's presence in Edmonton is growing, along with our expanding North American network," Andrew Pierce, Porter's vice-president of network planning and reporting, said in a statement. "By introducing non-stop flights to popular vacation destinations in Mexico and the U.S., we are giving local travellers even more options and the benefit of Porter's distinct elevated comfort for their winter getaways."

What does this change for Edmonton travellers?

The four routes give Edmonton passengers non-stop access to two Mexican leisure markets and two U.S. sun destinations without connecting through Toronto, Calgary or Vancouver hubs. Porter has also introduced vacation packages from Puerto Vallarta, with scheduling and booking details on its website. Packages for Los Cabos will launch soon, the airline said.

All four routes will be flown with the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2, the backbone of Porter's jet fleet expansion beyond its original turboprop operation at Toronto Billy Bishop. The aircraft will be configured in Porter's economy product rather than its premium cabin.

The economy configuration carries several service features the airline positions against low-cost competitors:

  • No middle seats, a function of the E195-E2's two-two layout
  • Complimentary beer and wine served in glassware
  • Premium snacks
  • Free Wi-Fi for all passengers

Fresh meals are included with PorterReserve bookings or available for purchase under PorterClassic fares. Full food and beverage details are published on the airline's website.

Airport sees single-month expansion as commitment signal

Edmonton International Airport's leadership framed the concentration of launches as evidence of sustained carrier investment rather than seasonal trial.

"Adding four new routes in a single month is a significant commitment to our market and a clear demonstration of confidence in the Edmonton region," James Jackson, the airport's vice-president of business and air service development, said in a statement. "We thank Porter for continuing to invest in Edmonton and look forward to the opportunities ahead."

The move deepens Porter's footprint at Edmonton, where the carrier has been building presence alongside its broader North American network growth. For the airport, the additions broaden international sun-route capacity heading into the peak winter charter and scheduled leisure season.

All four routes are seasonal and operate through the winter schedule. Porter has not announced whether any of the services will extend beyond the winter season, and their continuation will likely depend on load factors and booking performance through the coming months.
