Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has joined Pharma.Aero as a strategic member, bringing a 1.43-million-tonne annual cargo operation and a network of more than 300 direct destinations into the cross-industry healthcare logistics organisation. The move was announced on 6 October at the FlyPharma Europe conference in Copenhagen.
Pharma.Aero groups almost 100 life sciences and MedTech manufacturers, pharma-certified cargo communities, airports, airlines, freight forwarders and technology providers. Its stated remit covers collaboration on innovation, resilience, sustainability and the future development of healthcare supply chains. Schiphol's entry as a Strategic Airport Member follows Frankfurt Airport's accession late in 2026, the only other major European airfreight gateway to take the same step so far.
What does Schiphol bring to the table?
Schiphol handled 1.43 million tonnes of cargo in 2024 and links shippers to more than 300 direct destinations. Its cargo portfolio includes scheduled pharma flights, integrator traffic and a dedicated temperature-controlled handling footprint, supported by close operational ties with Maastricht Aachen Airport, which positions itself as a specialised pharma handler.
Frank Van Gelder, secretary general of Pharma.Aero, framed the addition in capacity terms. "As one of Europe's leading connectivity hubs, Schiphol brings extensive expertise, global reach, and a strong ambition to further strengthen its pharmaceutical logistics capabilities," he said. "Their decision to become a Strategic Airport Member reflects not only a commitment to contributing to our community, but also a willingness to engage, learn, and collaborate with the diverse network of industry leaders represented within Pharma.Aero."
Van Gelder added that Schiphol will participate in strategic discussions and industry initiatives, helping to "accelerate efforts to address the evolving challenges facing healthcare supply chains."
Why is Schiphol prioritising pharma?
Pharmaceutical airfreight has emerged as one of the highest-yield segments in cargo, with airlines and handlers competing on temperature-controlled capacity, CEIV-Pharma certification and end-to-end chain-of-custody visibility. Eduard Molkenboer, head of Schiphol Cargo, tied the membership to commercial positioning rather than tonnage targets.
"Joining Pharma.Aero aligns perfectly with our ambition to work alongside partners in building innovative and future-proof healthcare supply chains," Molkenboer said. "Global demand for reliable pharmaceutical logistics continues to grow, requiring strong collaboration across the entire supply chain. Schiphol offers an outstanding network of more than 300 direct destinations, the expertise of our cargo community, a strategic location, and close cooperation with Maastricht Aachen Airport. Through these strengths, Schiphol aims to actively contribute to the reliability, predictability, and quality of healthcare logistics worldwide."
How does this fit Pharma.Aero's European footprint?
The European network had been concentrated on Brussels, Liège and Frankfurt before Schiphol's arrival. Brussels Airlines Cargo and Liège Airport, along with integrator hubs in the region, have carried much of the certified pharma tonnage. With Frankfurt having joined late in 2026 and Schiphol now on board, Pharma.Aero controls strategic membership from two of the continent's three largest cargo airports by volume, alongside continued engagement from Brussels-based stakeholders.
Frankfurt's entry was framed in similar terms by Denis de Farias Duarte, vice president cargo development at Fraport. "As Europe's leading PharmaHub, Frankfurt Airport offers comprehensive expertise and optimal infrastructure to address the industry's most complex challenges," he said at the time. "Through our partnership with Pharma.Aero, we are strengthening global collaboration to ensure high-quality handling and maximum reliability for pharmaceutical products."
What changes operationally?
Membership carries no regulatory consequence but gives Schiphol a seat at Pharma.Aero's working groups on topics including sustainability, digital documentation, and pandemic-response readiness. The airport's cargo team gains access to the organisation's cross-industry project work, including the CEIV-Pharma community and the IATA Pharma Handling Programme interface. For Schiphol, the immediate deliverable is reputational positioning in a segment where airlines route premium freight based on certified handling rather than headline tonnage.
The next test will be whether Schiphol and Frankfurt, working through Pharma.Aero, align their standards with other European gateways still outside the network, and whether the added coordination translates into measurable share gains for Amsterdam in time- and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical flows.
