United Airlines on Tuesday unveiled 13 new international routes for spring and summer 2027, with more than half serving destinations never previously connected nonstop to the United States. The carrier will launch service on five of those routes with the Airbus A321XLR, the long-range narrowbody that entered commercial service this year and now anchors United's strategy of opening thin long-haul markets below its widebody gauge.
What is United flying, and to where?
Seven of the new routes originate from Newark (EWR), two start in San Francisco (SFO), and the remaining launches split across Los Angeles (LAX), Denver (DEN), and Washington Dulles (IAD). The longest-sector nonstop is the 10-plus-hour SFO-Okinawa (OKA) leg, scheduled three times weekly on a Boeing 777-200ER from March 27. A day later, United will resume SFO-Tel Aviv (TLV) on a Boeing 787-9, a route that has been paused since 2023.
In Europe, the A321XLR opens EWR service to Luxembourg (LUX) on April 2, Marseille (MRS) on June 4, Ibiza (IBZ) on May 31, Valencia (VLC) on June 2, and IAD-Toulouse (TLS) on April 26. Boeing 767-300ERs take over for EWR-Ljubljana (LJU) four times weekly from May 12, EWR-Olbia (OLB) daily from May 27, EWR-Catania (CTA) daily from May 28, and IAD-Milan (MXP) three times weekly from March 28. Denver adds year-round daily 787-9 service to Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) beginning May 27.
Los Angeles gains daily year-round 787-9 flights to Osaka (KIX) from March 27, a route Japan Airlines already operates from LAX. A 737 Max 8 handles the seasonal EWR-Terceira (TER) link in the Azores, running three times weekly from June 9 through early September — the only new route without lie-flat seating at the front of the cabin.
Why does the A321XLR matter here?
A 150-seat twinjet can sustain city pairs a 300-plus-seat widebody cannot profitably serve. United's SVP of Global Network Planning and Alliances, Patrick Quayle, framed the 2027 schedule as the product of "looking ahead to where people want to go and having the confidence to lead the industry" and "a mix of science, art, and a lot of creativity." He repeated the claim of "more destinations than any other U.S. carrier" nearly half a dozen times during a press call.
The XLR cabin configuration is the lever that makes those markets viable: lie-flat Polaris suites at the front, a Premium Economy section, and Economy Plus with the carrier's new blocked-middle-seat arrangement. The 767-300ER Sicily launches — Olbia and Catania — carry 46 Polaris seats each, a deliberate premium push onto routes Delta opened after a public vote earlier this year.
How does this fit United's broader network?
United has added 58 new international destinations over the last decade, a counterpoint to the consolidation narrative dominant after 2020. The carrier's earlier 2026 additions — Split (SPU), Bari (BRI), and Nuuk (GOH) — remain in the schedule.
European service from Newark expands from a hub strategy that already feeds dense connection traffic from the U.S. interior through EWR. Denver-Paris makes that base Europe's fifth year-round link, joining London-Heathrow (LHR), Munich (MUC), Frankfurt (FRA), and Rome (FCO). IAD-Milan pushes Dulles' European nonstop count toward 20 by next spring.
What changes for travelers and competitors?
Five of the new city pairs — EWR-Luxembourg, EWR-Marseille, EWR-Ibiza, EWR-Valencia, and SFO-Okinawa — leave United as the only U.S. carrier offering nonstop service. Air Transat has historically served Marseille from Montreal (YUL), and Delta flew JFK-Valencia more than a decade ago.
Quayle said the Toulouse route is partly underwritten by Airbus employees shuttling between the airframer's North American headquarters near Dulles and its commercial operations center in southwest France. The decision treats a corporate O&D anchor as the justification for launching a route that would otherwise rely on connecting traffic.
When do bookings open, and what's still to come?
All routes entered United's booking system Tuesday and start delivering revenue between late March and early June 2027. The seasonal services — Ljubljana, Ibiza, Valencia, Olbia, Catania, and Terceira — run through late September or early October. The SFO-Okinawa 777-200ER schedule mirrors typical transpacific seasonal patterns, ending in late October.
Lockheed-engineered routes and delivery schedules will determine whether United can sustain the cadence; the airline's A321XLR fleet is still in the early phase of induction, and each new long-haul narrowbody launch draws on a constrained subfleet. Whether the XLR's economics translate to reliable daily frequencies across five new European city pairs and one Azores island will become clearer once the first quarter of operation concludes in summer 2027.
