United Airlines has begun installing Starlink Wi-Fi on its Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet, with two Guam-based aircraft already equipped, the carrier announced on October 13, 2026. The installs follow the completed replacement of United's Guam 737-800 fleet with 10 MAX 8s — finished ahead of a year-end deadline.

Chief Customer Officer David Kinzelman announced the milestone at Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM). "We said we would replace the entire Guam fleet with MAX 8 aircraft by the end of this year, and we've finished early," Kinzelman said. He added that the same aircraft are among the first MAX 8s to receive Starlink.

United introduced the MAX 8 in Guam in March 2026 and rolled the type out across the region over the following months. The 10 aircraft now operate all United narrowbody flying from the island.

What does the connectivity change for Pacific routes?

Starlink's low-Earth orbit constellation delivers internet over oceans and remote regions where legacy inflight Wi-Fi has underperformed. United says that matters most on its Pacific network, where flights cross long stretches of open water and serve isolated communities.

The airline claims onboard speeds can exceed traditional broadband available in many parts of Micronesia. That is a carrier assertion, not an audited figure. No speed tests or third-party measurements accompanied the announcement.

The service is free for MileagePlus members in all cabins and supports multiple devices simultaneously. Since launching Starlink last spring, United reports more than 37.7 million passengers carried on over 538,000 equipped flights, with more than 14 million devices connected. The airline says Wi-Fi satisfaction scores on those aircraft nearly doubled over the period.

Starlink is currently available on about 47% of United's daily flights. The airline expects to complete installations across its entire fleet before the end of 2027. That timeline leaves roughly 18 months of fitting work at current pace, and United did not state a monthly installation rate or name the MRO partners performing the work.

Guam fleet: 10 aircraft, 15 destinations

The MAX 8s fly 15 destinations from Guam, including the Island Hopper route across Micronesia and services to Asia. United also operates extensive flying between Guam and Japan.

Each aircraft carries 164 seats, 14 of them in United First. Every seat has a screen: 13 inches in United First, 10 inches in Economy, plus USB charging and Bluetooth connectivity. The cabins add larger overhead bins and more extra-legroom seats.

One configuration detail is operational rather than commercial. Front rows in Economy can convert to carry a medical stretcher for medevac patients — a feature tailored to Micronesian communities where United is often the only scheduled carrier.

United is one of the largest private employers in the region, with more than 1,000 employees across Guam and Micronesia.

Ground investments precede the Wi-Fi rollout

The Starlink installations follow other United spending at GUM over the past year. The airline refreshed its check-in lobby with new kiosks and a redesigned layout intended to reduce congestion.

The broader pattern is clear: United is pairing newer aircraft with satellite connectivity on routes where it faces limited competition. What the announcement does not include is cost — neither the price of the Starlink installations nor the revenue impact of free Wi-Fi for members. United also did not say when mainland-based MAX 8s will enter the installation line, or in what order.

The fleetwide 2027 deadline now rests on an installation cadence the airline has not disclosed; if the Guam jets mark the starting gun, the pace of the next several hundred installs will determine whether United meets it.
