Air Astana plots JFK launch for 2027 as 787s arrive late
Air Astana targets JFK flights in H2 2027 with 787-9s, runs 30% engine spares amid Pratt & Whitney groundings, and grew China traffic 93% in H1 2026.
Read-back
- Air Astana plans twice-weekly Almaty–JFK Boeing 787-9 service in H2 2027; first 787 due December 2026 after repeated delays.
- Airline carries 26 spare engines for 43 aircraft — over 30% spares — due to Pratt & Whitney GTF removals.
- H1 2026 traffic grew 93% to China, 41% to India, 12% to Southeast Asia.
- February 2026 order: 15 more 787-9s (5 firm, 5 options, 5 purchase rights); 2025 order: up to 50 A320-family jets.
- Target fleet of 86 aircraft by end-2030; FlyArystan has tripled Kazakh travel propensity to 0.76 trips per capita.
Air Astana will launch nonstop flights to New York JFK in the second half of 2027, operating twice weekly with Boeing 787-9s that have already slipped past their original delivery dates. Ibrahim Canliel, who succeeded Peter Foster as CEO on April 1, 2026, laid out the timeline at the carrier's Almaty headquarters in early October. The first of three Dreamliners is scheduled for December 2026, the second for January 2027, the third for August 2027. Repeated delays pushed each date back.
The 787s replace the airline's veteran 767s. Canliel described the mission as largely similar, with bigger capacity and a different capability profile. "We will be using the Dreamliners at low utilization for about two months, doing a lot of short-sector flying, so that they can get certified," he said. The aircraft will carry a two-cabin layout with what he called a "very high-end business class." In February 2026 the airline ordered 15 more 787-9s — five firm, five options, five purchase rights — with deliveries running 2032 through 2035 and 2036.
What does the Russian airspace ban cost?
The JFK route faces a structural constraint. Air Astana does not fly through Russian airspace. Without overflight relief, the route operates with reduced payload. "If we get the relief to fly via Russia, that will shorten the route by about two hours, and then there would not be a payload restriction," Canliel said. A technical stop was ruled out flatly: "New York with a technical stop somewhere else makes no sense."
Europe takes a similar hit. Avoiding Russian airspace adds one and a half to two hours of flying time westward. That is additional cost without additional revenue, which he said makes European expansion more challenging. A change in overflight rights would significantly alter the airline's European network plans.
How fast is the eastern pivot growing?
The numbers are large. In the first half of 2026, traffic to China grew 93%, India 41%, Southeast Asia 12%. Available seat kilometers to China rose more than 90%, and the airline doubled its Chinese destinations within 18 months, helped by a bilateral visa-free regime.
Geography anchors the strategy. India sits three hours 20 minutes from Almaty, supporting double-daily frequencies. Urumqi is one hour 20 minutes away — shorter than the Almaty–Astana flagship route — and its Xinjiang catchment holds 27 million people against Kazakhstan's 20 million. When Middle East turmoil removed roughly 15% of Air Astana's international capacity from play in early 2026, the recovery came mostly from China, plus Southeast Asia: Da Nang, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Bangkok, Phuket. New routes to Langkawi and Tokyo Narita followed in the second half of 2026, Narita from November.
The Middle East disruption also pulled forward initiatives originally slated for 2028 through 2030. Canliel framed the surge as a discovery moment for the Central Asian transit corridor, while conceding it is temporary.
What did the Pratt & Whitney crisis force?
Engine reliability consumed much of the interview. Air Astana logged "well over 10 unscheduled engine removals" in summer 2025 and now runs 26 spare engines against 43 aircraft — more than 30% spares, versus a normal 8–10%. Mitigation included five additional A320ceos, engine resting during low-demand periods, and millimetric planning by engineering.
The result: 60% fewer groundings this summer than last, and a declared target of zero Pratt & Whitney groundings for next summer's peak. That claim rests on rising MRO induction capacity, more spare engines, and better manufacturer support. Canliel expects the GTF Advantage to become standard on future deliveries from late 2027 or 2028, and wants existing engines run through the improvement program too. Time-on-wing has improved industry-wide from 3,000 hours to 6,000–9,000, sometimes 8,000–10,000. In 2025 Air Astana planned a production increase, scaled it back on unscheduled removals, and kept crews and staff at full-production levels. "It's been very painful," he said.
How big can the fleet and market get?
The target fleet is 86 aircraft by end-2030, with 23 more joining over four years. Aircraft for 2026–2028 are sourced and committed; 2029–2030 remain under discussion. A 2025 order covers up to 50 A320-family jets — 25 firm, 25 options, deliveries from 2031.
At home, FlyArystan has tripled travel propensity since 2018, from 0.24 to 0.76 trips per capita. Comparable-GDP economies run 1.5 to 2 trips, so Canliel sees double or triple the growth left. The real prize is regional: an extended home market of 100 million people across Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, where travel propensity remains a fraction of Kazakhstan's. Air Astana claims it is 1.5 times its nearest competitor in passengers and fleet.
On succession, the board voted for continuity after a six-month transition announced in October 2025. Canliel joined in 2003 and served as CFO from 2017. He reaffirmed the founders' three principles: global safety and service standards, corporate governance, and financial independence. JFK is a start, he said, but "we have much lower-hanging fruit in the region" with two neighbors of 1.4 to 1.5 billion people each. Whether the 787 delivery dates and the zero-grounding pledge hold will define his first full years in the job.
