Flyadeal launches Riyadh–Mumbai route, calling India a 'strategic priority'

Read-back

  1. Flyadeal launched five-times-weekly Riyadh–Mumbai A320neo service on 3 October
  2. Hyderabad became the carrier's first Indian destination in July, also at five weekly flights
  3. Flyadeal operates 47 A320-family jets with 186-seat all-economy A320neos
  4. A321neos and A330-900neos are due for delivery in 2027
  5. Under Saudi Vision 2030, the airline targets 100 destinations and 100 aircraft by the early next decade

Flyadeal began a five-times-weekly Airbus A320neo service between Riyadh and Mumbai on 3 October, making India's commercial capital the Saudi budget carrier's second destination in the country after Hyderabad.

The Riyadh–Hyderabad route, also operated five times weekly, launched in July. Flyadeal describes India as a "strategic priority" in its international expansion, positioning the two routes as the opening moves in a broader push into one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets.

"India is one of the world's largest and fastest-growing aviation markets and a strategic priority for Flyadeal," said Sanjiv Kapoor, the airline's acting chief executive, who also serves as vice-president strategies at parent company Saudia Group.

Kapoor added that Flyadeal is "committed to strengthening our presence in India", calling the Mumbai launch "an important milestone in that journey".

What does the new route offer?

Flyadeal operates its A320neos in an all-economy configuration with 186 seats. The carrier says passengers arriving in Riyadh will connect "seamlessly" onto its domestic Saudi Arabian network, giving the Mumbai and Hyderabad routes a feed role beyond point-to-point traffic.

That connectivity matters for the airline's economics: India–Saudi traffic spans both the large expatriate labour market and religious travel, and domestic connections through Riyadh widen the catchment beyond the capital itself.

Who is running the airline?

The Mumbai launch comes during a leadership transition. Flyadeal is searching for a new chief executive after Steven Greenway departed to take the helm at Australia's Alliance Aviation on 1 October. Greenway had led Flyadeal since 2023.

Kapoor, the acting chief executive, is carrying the international expansion strategy in the interim, drawing on his group-level role at Saudia Group, which controls the low-cost carrier alongside flagship airline Saudia.

What is the fleet and growth picture?

Flyadeal launched operations in 2017 and now flies 47 A320-family jets. Its growth plan has two near-term fleet milestones:

  • A321neo deliveries due in 2027
  • A330-900neo widebodies due in 2027

The A330-900neo order signals a shift beyond the carrier's current narrowbody-only operation, opening the prospect of longer-haul low-cost flying from its Saudi bases.

The fleet expansion sits within Saudi Vision 2030, the kingdom's economic diversification strategy. Under that framework, Flyadeal plans to double its network and fleet to 100 destinations and 100 aircraft by the beginning of the next decade.

That target implies a substantial acceleration from the current 47-aircraft fleet, and the India routes illustrate where the growth is directed: high-density, price-sensitive markets with strong underlying demand.

What comes next?

With Hyderabad and Mumbai now operating at five weekly frequencies each, further Indian destinations appear probable as Flyadeal works toward its 100-destination goal, with the 2027 arrival of A321neos and A330-900nos set to expand both capacity and range for the carrier's next phase of international growth.
