Huntsville International Secures $1.9 Million State Grant for Snow Fleet Facility

Huntsville International Airport lands a $1.9 million ALDOT grant to build a 10,800 sq ft facility protecting its snow-removal fleet, part of a broader capital push.

Read-back

  1. Huntsville International Airport received a $1.9 million ALDOT grant under the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program.
  2. The funded building spans 10,800 square feet with three drive-through bays and is expected to take six months to complete.
  3. The facility will store snow removal vehicles, runway sweepers and deicing chemicals.
  4. The project sits alongside a $57 million parking deck and terminal expansion work at HSV.

Huntsville International Airport has received a $1.9 million grant from the Alabama Department of Transportation to build a dedicated storage facility for its winter weather snow-removal equipment fleet.

The award comes through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program and will finance a 10,800-square-foot, pre-engineered metal building with three drive-through bays. Once construction begins, the airport expects the project to take six months to complete.

What will the new facility do?

The building will house and safeguard heavy operational assets, including:

  • Specialized airfield snow removal vehicles
  • Runway sweepers
  • Ground maintenance equipment
  • Deicing chemicals used to remove frozen precipitation from paved surfaces

Beyond protecting high-dollar equipment from weather exposure, the structure will give airport personnel space and amenities to access and maintain the fleet more easily and to support removal operations during a winter weather event, the airport said.

Why airport officials say it matters

CEO Butch Roberts framed the grant as an operational-readiness investment tied to regional growth.

"Maintaining our airside infrastructure and operational readiness is vital to supporting the rapid growth of our region," Roberts said in a news release. "This $1.9 million ALDOT grant allows us to build a protective facility for our essential ice and snow removal fleet and ensures that our crews can respond to weather events and airfield needs with efficiency."

Roberts also credited Alabama Rep. Rex Reynolds and state partners at ALDOT for supporting the airport's long-term operations.

The airport described the investment as reflecting alignment between local aviation officials and the state transportation department as both work to strengthen North Alabama's logistics network.

What is the economic argument?

Reynolds, a Republican who represents parts of Huntsville and Madison County and chairs the House Ways and Means General Fund committee, tied the project to Alabama's competitiveness for economic development.

"Aviation plays a direct role in driving commerce to our state, and securing high-paying jobs across the Southeast and nationally depends on having the transportation infrastructure to support that expansion," Reynolds said.

For a commercial airport serving a metro area anchored by defense and aerospace employers, winter operations capacity is a reliability issue: a closed runway after an ice event carries direct network and cargo consequences.

Where does the project sit in HSV's wider capital program?

The snow-equipment facility is one of several projects underway at Huntsville International. The airport is also building a $57 million parking deck, continuing concourse and terminal improvements, and expanding facilities near the West Runway.

Together, the work signals sustained capital investment aimed at keeping pace with passenger and cargo growth in the region.

With the six-month construction timeline, the airport could have the protected fleet facility in place ahead of a future winter season, provided the project starts on schedule.
