Textron's Aerosonde Flies 150 nm Between Two Vertiports in Commercial Airspace

An Aerosonde Mk. 4.7 VTOL UAS flew 150 nm between two vertiports in commercial airspace, linking Blacksburg and Blackstone, Virginia under MAAP's AAM Smart Airspace Program.

Read-back

  1. Aerosonde Mk. 4.7 VTOL UAS flew nearly 150 nm between two vertiports in commercial airspace — claimed as a first for a UAS
  2. Flight ran from Blacksburg (Virginia Tech Transportation Institute) to Textron's 38,000 sq. ft. Aerosonde Center of Excellence in Blackstone, taking two and a half hours
  3. Demonstration was conducted with the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership, one of seven FAA-designated UAS test sites, under the Virginia AAM Smart Airspace Program launched in March 2025; the Aerosonde family has over 750,000 flight hours and 40-plus payload options

A Textron Systems Aerosonde Mk. 4.7 vertical-takeoff-and-landing uncrewed aircraft has flown nearly 150 nautical miles through commercial airspace between two vertiports — a first for an uncrewed aircraft system, according to the company.

The flight launched from a vertiport at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, and landed two and a half hours later at a second vertiport at Textron Systems' Aerosonde Center of Excellence in Blackstone. Textron ran the demonstration in collaboration with the Mid-Atlantic Aviation Partnership (MAAP), the FAA-designated UAS test site hosted at Virginia Tech that has led the Virginia Advanced Air Mobility Smart Airspace Program since its launch in March 2025.

The program's stated mission is to research advanced air mobility aircraft operating in the local region through vertiport infrastructure. The Aerosonde flight gives that effort its most concrete milestone to date: a single aircraft transiting between two purpose-designated vertiports through airspace used by commercial traffic, rather than confined to a segregated test range.

The landing site itself is part of Textron's broader sustainment footprint for the type. The 38,000 sq. ft. Aerosonde Center of Excellence in Blackstone serves as the company's global logistics and training hub for the Aerosonde family, supporting assembly, testing, classroom instruction and flight-line training.

The airframe Textron selected for the demonstration carries a long operational record. The Aerosonde family has accumulated more than 750,000 flight hours across land- and sea-based operations, spanning intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance through electronic warfare missions. The system offers more than 40 payload options and flies in both VTOL and fixed-wing configurations, a flexibility Textron pitches for missions ranging from local operations to deployed taskings abroad.

The demonstration's significance lies less in the aircraft than in the airspace procedures. Vertiport-to-vertiport transit through commercial airspace is the operational model advanced air mobility proponents intend to scale with piloted electric aircraft in the coming years. Flying it first with a smaller, uncrewed system allows MAAP and Textron to work through the airspace-integration questions — routing, separation and vertiport operations — before passenger-carrying AAM aircraft enter service.

MAAP is one of seven FAA-designated UAS test sites, giving the flight a regulatory foundation within the agency's established test-site framework rather than a standalone exemption.

Textron has not disclosed additional flights or a timeline for follow-on demonstrations. The Virginia Smart Airspace Program, now 18 months old, is expected to build on the Blacksburg-to-Blackstone route as it continues AAM research in the region.
