WORLDHOISTS and ORIT Back Asia's Largest Wide-Body Hangar in Shanghai
WORLDHOISTS and ORIT are supporting Shanghai's new wide-body maintenance hangar, billed as Asia's largest. Certification scope and bay count remain undisclosed pending commissioning.
Read-back
- WORLDHOISTS and ORIT are supporting a wide-body maintenance hangar in Shanghai described as Asia's largest
- The announcement did not disclose the operator, bay count, certification scope or commissioning date
- The 'Asia's largest' claim is unverified and invites comparison with HAECO, ST Engineering and Gameco wide-body capacity

Shanghai now hosts what its backers call Asia's largest wide-body aircraft maintenance hangar, with WORLDHOISTS and ORIT confirmed as supporters of the facility, according to an announcement carried by StreetInsider.
The claim of regional leadership rests on the hangar's ability to accommodate wide-body aircraft at a scale unmatched elsewhere in Asia, the companies said. No independent verification of the superlative was offered in the announcement, and the ranking should be measured against established wide-body MRO capacity elsewhere in the region — including complexes operated by ST Engineering in Singapore, HAECO in Hong Kong and Xiamen's Ameco-linked operations — before it is treated as settled fact.
What the announcement does establish is the participation of two named suppliers. WORLDHOISTS, whose business centers on lifting and material-handling equipment, and ORIT are tied to the Shanghai project as supporters. For a wide-body hangar, hoisting and docking systems are not peripheral equipment: engine cranes, tail docks, fuselage access platforms and landing-gear handling gear determine turnaround times and the range of checks a facility can perform, from C-checks through to heavy structural work.
The location matters for capacity arithmetic. China's Big Three carriers — Air China, China Eastern and China Southern — operate combined wide-body fleets running to several hundred aircraft, including Boeing 777s and 787s and Airbus A330s and A350s. Air China's wide-body fleet alone exceeds 100 aircraft. Every heavy check diverted to an in-country facility rather than an overseas MRO preserves maintenance spend domestically and frees slots during peak flying seasons. A hangar sized as Asia's largest would, if the designation holds, add meaningful宽-body line positions to a national network that has historically outsourced a share of deep maintenance to Singapore, Hong Kong and the Gulf.
The announcement did not specify the hangar's operator, its certificating authority, the number of aircraft bays, the check levels it will support or a commissioning date. Those details will determine whether the facility targets domestic carrier demand, third-party airline customers, or freighter conversions — a segment where Chinese MRO capacity has been expanding alongside e-commerce-driven cargo growth.
For the suppliers, association with a flagship project functions as a reference sale. Equipment packages for wide-body hangars typically run to docking systems for multiple type certificates, and a Shanghai installation demonstrates capability to both Chinese MRO groups and to lessors weighing where their aircraft will receive mid-life and end-of-lease work.
Verification of the "Asia's largest" claim should follow published floor-area and bay-count comparisons. HAECO's Hong Kong operation, ST Engineering's Singapore campuses and Gameco's Guangzhou base each operate multiple wide-body bays under CAAC, HKCAD or Singapore CAAS oversight respectively. The Shanghai facility's ranking will be testable once its footprint and bay configuration are disclosed.
The project signals continued investment in Chinese heavy-maintenance capacity at a time when global wide-body MRO slots remain constrained and airlines are extending maintenance intervals to manage costs. Expect the operators to disclose certification scope and first customer aircraft as commissioning approaches.
