Blackhawk Cuts PT6A Overhaul Downtime to Days With Engine Exchange

Blackhawk's fixed-price Engine Exchange delivers overhauled PT6A engines in two to three days instead of 180, with core credit and no rental engines.

Read-back

  1. Blackhawk Engine Exchange cuts PT6A overhaul downtime from about 180 days to two-to-three days.
  2. Overhauled engines come at fixed prices through Pratt & Whitney Canada's DOF network, with credit for exchanged cores.
  3. The program eliminates rental engines, multiple swaps and parts waits, and adds inventory purchasing from the market.

The Blackhawk Group has launched a fixed-price engine exchange program that compresses PT6A overhaul downtime from roughly 180 days to as little as two to three days.

The Blackhawk Engine Exchange supplies newly overhauled Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A engines at fixed prices, sourced through P&WC's Designated Overhaul Facility (DOF) network. For operators of PT6A-powered turboprops, the model targets the single largest cost of a traditional overhaul: weeks or months on the ground while the engine moves through a shop visit.

Under the exchange structure, operators receive a ready-to-install overhauled engine and receive financial credit for their exchanged engine core. The approach eliminates rental engines, removes the need for multiple engine swaps and cuts waiting time on parts. Blackhawk also handles process management, and the company says it can buy parts and engines on the open market, which it argues makes inventory planning and procurement easier.

Blackhawk frames the program as a response to a set of operational problems that have grown more acute across the turboprop fleet: extended aircraft downtime, revenue losses from grounded aircraft, unpredictable overhaul costs, parts shortages, and the administrative burden of managing aircraft storage and rental engines.

The program marks a widening of Blackhawk's engine business. The company built its position in the market on replacing time-expired engines with new, higher-output versions — conversions that raise performance rather than simply restoring it.

Vice President of Blackhawk's Engine Exchange Dale Morrow said: "Blackhawk has set itself apart in the industry by replacing timed out engines with new, more powerful engines that increase performance."

"We now offer solutions for operators that want to retain their same engine type but cannot afford the distraction, uncertainty and downtime associated with overhauling an engine today," Morrow continued.

"Now we can provide an engine upgrade, a ready-to-install overhauled engine, or support you with overhaul management and guidance," he added. "Whatever you choose to do with your aircraft, Blackhawk's engine programs and experts can support you."

The exchange model effectively gives PT6A operators three paths through Blackhawk: a performance upgrade to a new engine, a like-for-like overhauled replacement at a fixed price, or third-party overhaul management. Which path operators choose will hinge on how they weigh downtime against capital cost — but the two-to-three-day turnaround claim now sets the benchmark against which traditional DOF shop visits will be measured.
