Challenge Group halts Navi Mumbai freighter flights over reliability gaps

Challenge Group has suspended freighter services to Navi Mumbai International Airport, citing reliability problems less than two months after scheduled cargo flights launched at the new Indian gateway.

Read-back

  1. Challenge Group has suspended its freighter services to NMIA, the first carrier to publicly withdraw from the new airport.
  2. NMIA opened in December; scheduled freighter operations began on 1 August with an IndiGo cargo departure.
  3. Cargo operators were asked to relocate from CSMIA for ten months of infrastructure works starting in August.
  4. Operators cite 2.5 to 3 hour road journeys between NMIA and central Mumbai as a connectivity gap.
  5. Silk Way West, Cathay Cargo and Hong Kong Air Cargo confirmed the shift, with Lufthansa Cargo understood to have moved.

Challenge Group has suspended its freighter services to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), becoming the first carrier to publicly withdraw from the recently opened Indian cargo gateway.

Why did Challenge Group pull out?

Freighter operator Challenge Group disclosed the decision on LinkedIn, citing an operational setup that "does not yet enable us to deliver our cargo services with the level of reliability and certainty we require."

"While the circumstances leading to this situation are outside our control, the decision to suspend our service is a deliberate one," Challenge Group added. The company framed the withdrawal as a customer-protection measure rather than a commercial dispute.

What triggered the relocation?

Freighter operators were asked to temporarily shift from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to NMIA to free the main Mumbai hub for ten months of cargo infrastructure works. The CSMIA programme was scheduled to begin in August.

NMIA opened in December. Scheduled freighter operations did not begin at the new airport until 1 August, when an IndiGo freighter departed. Several carriers have since confirmed, or are understood to have, moved:

  • Silk Way West
  • Cathay Cargo
  • Hong Kong Air Cargo
  • Lufthansa Cargo

What complaints have surfaced?

Local cargo groups argue NMIA is not yet a viable alternative to CSMIA. Operators and forwarders posting on social media point to poor surface connectivity, with road journeys between the new airport and central Mumbai running 2.5 to 3 hours. Others describe the switch as rushed, with insufficient time to validate ground-handling, customs and apron processes.

How big is the network impact?

Challenge Group did not disclose which routes or frequencies were cut, leaving the immediate tonnage effect on its Indian international corridors unclear. The carrier said it is "actively evaluating alternative options to maintain strong connectivity between India and our international network" and plans to communicate a replacement service shortly.

"We remain committed to Mumbai and look forward to resuming our operations once the necessary conditions are in place to support our cargo services reliably and effectively," the operator added.

How does this reshape the India freighter map?

The withdrawal lands during a thin period for Indian scheduled freighter capacity. IndiGo's 1 August launch and the four foreign operators shifting to NMIA were meant to absorb the volume CSMIA clears per night for cargo carriers. Challenge Group's exit removes at least one widebody rotation from that plan. Forwarders expecting seamless connectivity through India's financial capital are likely to hedge capacity through Delhi, Hyderabad or Thiruvananthapuram.

What does the timeline look like?

  • December: NMIA opens for commercial traffic.
  • 1 August: First scheduled freighter departs (IndiGo).
  • August start: CSMIA cargo works begin, running for ten months.
  • Late August / early September: Challenge Group suspends; replacement service to be announced shortly.

That sequence leaves NMIA operators roughly nine months to close the gaps cited by Challenge Group before CSMIA's cargo apron is scheduled to return to service.

What are the broader stakes?

For the new airport, the suspension is an early commercial setback barely a month after scheduled freighter operations launched. The ten-month CSMIA works window sets a fixed deadline on any fixes, and each additional freighter defection would further narrow widebody cargo capacity feeding into India's largest metro market.

Watch Challenge Group's next service announcement: the carrier's choice of aircraft, gateway and schedule will signal whether it views NMIA's opening troubles as recoverable or a structural drag on the Mumbai cargo model.
