Challenge Group has suspended freighter operations at Navi Mumbai International Airport, citing operational challenges at the facility.
The Israeli cargo operator, which has built its network around dedicated Boeing 747 freighter services connecting India, the Middle East, Europe and North America, has stopped flying cargo jets into the new Mumbai-area gateway while it works through the difficulties.
Why does the suspension matter?
Navi Mumbai International Airport is one of India's most significant new infrastructure projects, positioned to relieve pressure on the congested Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Cargo carriers view the gateway as a strategic play: Mumbai is India's commercial capital and generates substantial export demand, particularly in pharmaceuticals, engineering goods and perishables.
A freighter operator pulling services so soon after the airport opened to cargo traffic signals that the facility's cargo handling chain — ground handling, ramp capacity, customs processing or trucking connections — may not yet be running at the reliability levels dedicated freighter operators require.
For Challenge Group, the suspension removes a recently added Indian station from its network. The carrier has positioned India as a core market, with Mumbai serving as a key origin point for transshipment cargo moving through its Liège and Tel Aviv hubs.
What happens next?
Challenge Group has not announced a return date, according to the report in Air Cargo News. The suspension leaves the carrier's Indian customers — forwarders and shippers booking freighter capacity — dependent on its remaining Indian gateways or on competing operators and bellyhold capacity.
The pullback also poses a question for Navi Mumbai's cargo ambitions: whether the airport can resolve the operational issues quickly enough to retain freighter operators that committed early, or whether carriers will consolidate capacity back at established gateways until the facility matures.
The operator's resumption of freighter flights will serve as the clearest indicator that the airport's cargo operation has reached the standard dedicated freight airlines demand.
