ECS Group has named Francisco Hernandez chief operating officer for the Americas, promoting a 16-year company veteran as the GSSA group rebuilds its regional management structure ahead of planned expansion.

Hernandez will pair with chief commercial officer – Americas Joao Ferreira. The stated goal, in ECS Group's own words, is "a more integrated Americas organisation capable of scaling while continuing to uphold close customer relationships and maintaining local market expertise".

That phrasing deserves scrutiny. Scaling and local intimacy pull in opposite directions in the GSA business. The proof will come in retention of airline contracts, not in organisational charts.

What does the appointment change?

On paper, Hernandez owns regional coordination and operational execution of the group's Americas strategy. His brief covers three areas: "building and deepening ECS Group's airline partnerships, developing flexible, tailored solution models, and embedding digital capabilities for improved customer service".

Together with Ferreira, he is tasked with establishing what the company calls a "streamlined Americas organisation that has the flexibility to grow and adapt, while maintaining the customer-centricity and market knowledge that the Group is known for".

The company did not say how many countries, offices or airline accounts the Americas region covers. It gave no revenue figures and no timeline for the expansion it says it is preparing for. Those absences matter.

Hernandez's credential is tenure. He has spent 16 years inside ECS Group, working closely with commercial, customer service and operational teams in the US. The company credits him with "extensive understanding of its operations, airline partners, teams, local market realities, and customer needs". It is an internal promotion, not an external hire — a signal the group values continuity over fresh perspective.

CEO frames the move around CargoTech

Chief executive Jean Ceccaldi framed the appointment against the group's wider agenda. He said: "Across the globe, our ECS Group mission is to transform the traditional GSA business model by leveraging the ideal combination of digital capabilities and human expertise to drive commercial resilience and growth."

Ceccaldi added: "Who better to lead operations in the Americas than someone who has been so actively involved in establishing its US airline portfolio and has in-depth comprehension of CargoTech's digital capabilities?"

The CargoTech reference is the most concrete claim in the announcement. It ties the appointment to ECS Group's existing digital stack rather than to something still on the drawing board. Even so, "in-depth comprehension" is a characterisation, not a measurable result. No productivity or service metrics accompany it.

One connected network across the Americas

Hernandez set out his own priorities in some detail. "Getting the Americas to operate as one connected network will open up many opportunities and offer far greater customer value," he said.

He named the mechanisms: "By sharing market intelligence, coordinating key accounts, and developing cross-border and interline flows, our local teams will be in a stronger position to serve customers and offer fast solutions across the US, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean."

His first priority, he said, is "team connection and capability alignment to create a solid operating rhythm across the entire Americas". He continued: "Clear accountability, consistent performance management and faster escalation and decision-making will ensure and strengthen service quality for our airline partners."

Note what that language implies: the region today lacks a unified operating rhythm, consistent performance management and fast escalation. The new COO is, in effect, describing the problem he inherits.

Digital transformation as the enabler

Hernandez also committed to technology. "Digital transformation will also be a key enabler to consistently improving productivity, responsiveness, and decision-making across the region," he said.

His closing promise sets the test for the appointment: "Customers should experience ECS Group as one connected Americas organisation – locally expert, operationally consistent, digitally enabled, and able to mobilise the strength of the wider Group."

Four adjectives, no baseline. Whether the reorganisation delivers will show up in airline contract wins and renewals across the US, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean over the coming quarters.
