Fraport Draws €8.7 Million in Federal Funds for Electric Ground Power
Fraport secures €8.7M in federal funding for electric GPUs and preconditioned air at Frankfurt, targeting all 252 stands by 2030 under its Net Zero Master Plan.
Read-back
- Fraport received approximately €8.7 million in German federal funding for electric ground power at Frankfurt Airport.
- All 252 aircraft parking positions will have fixed power or battery-electric GPUs by 2030.
- €8.5 million funds preconditioned air systems at 18 Concourse A positions by 2029.
- €227,000 buys two battery-electric GPUs, bringing the fleet to 18 units, rising to 22 by 2029.
- Frankfurt targets 50,000 tonnes of CO2e annually by 2030 and net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2045.

Fraport has secured roughly €8.7 million in German federal funding to expand electric ground power and preconditioned air systems at Frankfurt Airport, with all 252 aircraft parking positions set to receive fixed connections or mobile battery-electric GPUs by 2030.
The money flows through Germany's Ground Power Directive program, administered by the Federal Ministry of Transport. It splits into two tranches: approximately €8.5 million for preconditioned air (PCA) installations, and €227,000 toward two additional battery-electric ground power units.
What does the funding actually buy?
The larger tranche will equip 18 aircraft parking positions in Terminal 1's Concourse A with PCA systems by 2029. Two positions in the concourse already have the technology, bringing Concourse A to 20 PCA-served stands once the work wraps.
The smaller tranche adds two battery-electric GPUs to Fraport's fleet, lifting it to 18 units. The operator plans to reach 22 battery-electric GPUs by 2029.
PCA systems push conditioned air directly into aircraft cabins while parked, cutting the hours that fuel-burning auxiliary power units run at the gate. That translates into lower kerosene and diesel consumption per turn — and, for airlines operating dense schedules at Frankfurt, measurable savings on the ground.
Why not fixed power everywhere?
Infrastructure constraints rule out stationary 400 Hz connections at every stand. Where civil works or layout make fixed feeds impractical, mobile battery-electric GPUs will carry the load, supplying aircraft systems during parking.
The hybrid approach — fixed power where feasible, batteries where it isn't — reflects the practical trade-off airports face as they retire diesel-powered ground support equipment without sacrificing operational flexibility across positions of different sizes and uses.
How does this fit Fraport's climate targets?
The upgrades sit inside Fraport's Net Zero Master Plan, a program of roughly 2,000 measures aimed at shrinking the company's environmental footprint. Frankfurt Airport's annual greenhouse gas emissions are targeted to fall to 50,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent by 2030.
The broader corporate goal: net-zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across fully consolidated operations worldwide by 2045.
For now, the funded hardware is concrete — 18 PCA positions, two GPUs, a 2029 deadline — while the 2030 full-coverage target across 252 stands remains the commitment against which Fraport's delivery record will be measured.
